Football Replay, a new initiative to help the over 35s get back into football kicks off on Sunday 13th June 2010 at 45 centres across the UK with over 10,000 players forecasted every week - specifically created for those men who would love to get back into football but in a fun, relaxed and friendly way. For a full list of venues, please check out: www.footballreplay.net
It will be operating every Sunday afternoon, across 45 centres throughout the UK and is open to individuals or groups - you can choose one of the pre-set kick off times to suit: either, 2.00pm, 4.00pm or 6.00pm and sessions will last for an hour. Players will be asked to pre-register but a ‘turn up and play’ option will be offered.
It’s a programme focusing more about having fun rather than competitiveness and the emphasis is placed more on style and skills rather than ‘blood & guts’ football, such as no sliding tackles, therefore minimising the injury risk.
Sport England’s Chair, Richard Lewis, said:
“This is a great chance for men to rediscover their love of football, just at the age when some are considering hanging up their boots. Football Replay will open up new opportunities for men who want to take part in football in a fun and friendly environment.”

Men's Health Week 2010 will highlight the many ways of staying healthy, even for people who claim to be 'too busy to exercise'. The week is not just about encouraging more men to take part in sport – there are many other ways of staying healthy. Simple things such as using stairs instead of the lift, getting off the bus one stop earlier and walking the rest of the way, cleaning the car by hand rather than going to the car wash and so on.

Health MOTs for National Men’s Health Week
NHS East Riding of Yorkshire will be taking to the road with the new East Riding Public Health Vehicle for National Men’s Health Week (14-20 June 2010).
Health Trainers, public health staff, the CASPHER (Chlamydia Awareness Screening Programme for Hull and East Riding) and OWEN (Older Workers Employment Network) will offer healthy lifestyle information and advice to men of all ages.
Health Trainers can offer a simple ‘Health MOT’ on the spot for men visiting the Vehicle which measures blood pressure, weight and BMI.
The Public Health Vehicle will stop at Howdens Joinery in Howden from 9.30 -12.30 pm on Tuesday 15th June where the 1500 strong workforce is predominantly made up from men.
National Men’s Health Week is organised by the Men’s Health Forum. Physical inactivity is directly linked to a wide range of major health problems, including obesity, cardiovascular disease, diabetes, and several cancers. Currently, just 40% of men say they are active at the levels recommended by the Chief Medical Officer. Significantly, there is a big drop in men’s activity levels after the age of 35.
Action is needed because far too many men still die too young – 22% of men in England and Wales die before they reach 64 compared to 13% of women; 42% are dead by 75 compared to 26% of women.
In the East Riding 17% of men die before the age of 64, compared with 11% of women. 39% of men die before the age of 75, compared with 24% of women.
Dr Tim Allison, Director of Public Health at NHS East Riding of Yorkshire:
“Research tells us that men are often reluctant to visit their GP when they have health problems, which results in preventable diseases not being detected early enough. Early detection can make all the difference.
“We want to encourage men to visit the public health vehicle, have a Health MOT and chat with the health staff about making lifelong healthy lifestyle choices.”
The general public can visit the stand at:
15 June Goole Boothferry Road pedestrian area 1 pm to 4 pm
16 June Withernsea Pier Towers, Central Promenade 10 am – 4 pm
17 June Bridlington King street, pedestrian area 10 am – 4 pm.
Further information:
The East Riding Public Health Vehicle is a multi-purpose vehicle which is managed jointly by NHS East Riding of Yorkshire and East Riding of Yorkshire Council and paid for by Government money allocated to improve services .The vehicle includes a kitchen/classroom area, presentation facilities and a medical room. It will be used by various services including smoking session, sexual health, healthy lifestyle and health promotions.

CAMPAIGN TACKLES DANGEROUS LEVELS OF SITTING DOWN IN BRIGHTON & HOVE
Bar Stool Aerobics and Space Hopper horse racing are amongst the bizarre initiatives being launched to help reduce dangerous levels of drinking, drug-taking and sitting down during National Men’s Health Week in Brighton & Hove (14th – 20th June 2010).
According to men’s health campaigners, at least one man in the city dies prematurely each week due to poor lifestyle and lack of exercise, which is why they are using the week to encourage more men to start taking the recommended five lots of 30 minutes of regular exercise every week.
The campaign to help more men Get A Move On! during Men’s Health Week has been created by The Men’s Network, a new charitable organisation set up to help men and boys to reach their greatest potential.
Throughout the week men in the city will be given the opportunity to take part in free and subsidised events to encourage them to get more active by walking, cycling, playing more sport and trying different types of exercise classes and activities.
Amongst the more unusual initiatives will be the sight of out-of-shape middle-aged men competing against each other in a Space Hopper Derby on the home straight at Brighton Racecourse during the race meeting on Tuesday 15th June.
Organisers will also be taking the campaign into local bars and pubs and encouraging football fans to try out some barstool aerobics during the build up to England’s World Cup opener against Algeria on Friday 18th June.
The week culminates with a dads and lads beach volleyball tournament to celebrate Fathers’ Day on Sunday 20th June.
Glen Poole, chair of The Men’s Network which created the Get A Move On! campaign for Men’s Health Week in Brighton & Hove said:
“If the statistics are right then Men in Brighton & Hove are some of the unhealthiest and unhappiest men in the country. They also tend to live a bit faster and end up dying a bit younger as a result.
“We’re not here to tell any man that he should give up the things he enjoys, we’re just saying that if you get more active, more often - you’re going to live a longer, happier, healthier life.
“Our mission during the week is to take a small step towards reducing dangerous levels of drinking, drug-taking and sitting down amongst local men.”
With this target in mind, The Men’s Network has chosen a local “unfitness freak” who was recently diagnosed with angina, to be the ambassador for men’s health in Brighton & Hove during the week.
44 year old Doug Devaney from Brighton & Hove said:
“I'm not a big fan of people telling you how to live your life. But this year I collapsed halfway up one of Brighton's many hills and I was diagnosed with angina.
“That's why I'm putting my weight - yes all of it - behind the campaign to encourage more men to Get A Move On! by getting active for 30 minutes 5 times a week.
“I still hate being lectured, I still hate self-appointed dietary experts and I still hate exercise converts. But I hate the angina even more.
“And they tell me that fit men live longer, happier, healthier lives - and even have better sex - so it's got to be worth a go!”
The Get A Move On! campaign launches on Monday 14th June 2010 at 9.30 am when men representing Brighton’s many different male communities – football fans, windsurfers, drag queens, cyclists, firefighters, policemen, council workers, businessmen etc – taking part in a yoga class together on Hove Lawns at the foot of Waterloo Street, BN1 2PX.

Fylde Coast YMCA will be offering the opportunity for 30 sedentary men to improve their health during Men’s Health Week. For men over the age of 35 who are keen to improve their health, Fylde Coast YMCA will be offering free 3 month fitness memberships to help encourage an increase in activity levels. Each participant will be offered free health assessments and improvements in mental health will also be monitored so the effectiveness of the intervention can be established.
