I manage a Physical Activity Volunteer Mentor Project in Bolton. We currently have a number of mentors volunteering for us on our referral projects such as cardiac rehab etc. We have just recruited 14 more volunteers who are due to start their training in a few weeks. I want to offer these volunteers work programmes which relate to engaging people within the community to encourage them to take up physical activity rather than working with clients we already have through referral. If you work with mentors I would really appreciate it if you could you let me know how you make the best use of their skills to engage the community in activity?’

I manage a volunteer mentor project in St Helens called the Physical Activity Mentoring Scheme - 'PAMS'. The project is linked very closely to the Health Trainer and Life Style Referral 'Choices' scheme here. Anyone identified as needing additional support i.e support at an activity session, will be paired up with a suitable PAM volunteer (this maybe for the first session or over a few weeks).
The 'fear' barrier is broken down due to the support given by the volunteer. On many occasions, people who would never attempt to go to a tai chi or circuit class alone now do with the encouragement of a volunteer. If you want futher info please email me on hannahjones@sthelens.gov.uk |
